What does Project Pangea stand for?
As a part of Alfred Wegener theory of continental drift, Pangea's existence was first proposed in 1912. Its name is derived from the Greek pangaia, which means “all the Earth.”
From the root meaning “all the Earth” it can be realized Cloudflare team wanted a name which presents the whole earth.
That’s why Project Pangea is a project for the whole earth people who are deprived of secure internet access.
Who is eligible for Project Pangea?
Till now the internet is not available for half of the world’s population. Besides, many more are limited to poor, expensive, and unreliable connectivity. That’s why Cloudflare announced Project Pangea for the underserved communities around the world.
By Project Pangea, local communities can use Cloudflare’s performance and security services for free to more reliably and securely connect to the global Internet more reliably and securely without paying the high costs of bandwidth.
By this project Cloudflare is supporting local groups or nonprofits that build their own telecom infrastructure to find a free and sustainable way to connect people who are dependent to the internet for every purpose like communication, education and economic development.
Why is Cloudflare launching Project Pangea?
Many people are deprived of access to the Internet till date. Many communities depend on poor, expensive, and unreliable connectivity. A group of people rely on non-profits or form local groups to build their own networks by erecting Wi-Fi antennas or laying fiber optic cables. But this is very expensive.
Bandwidth is either unavailable or unaffordable for different reasons in these communities. Including developing nations this problem is seen across the world.
For example In the United States 21 million people have no high-speed connection despite some large levels of public and private infrastructure.
That’s why Cloudflare is launching Project Pangea to offer a chance for those communities to get the Internet experience they deserve–superior, reliable, and secure.
Because Safe, reliable, and sustainable Internet access is a basic human right that believes Matthew Prince, co-founder & CEO of Cloudflare.
